Years ago, when I was looking for my first DAC, I went to a shop, carefully listended to a dozen different ones (in the €500/1500 range) and… none was making me happy 😐
So I started searching something else and read about this new dutch designer. After reading many reviews I took a leap of faith and ordered an Octave (MkI, the tiny one made of two separate boxes). When I first plugged in… it was a complete disaster butI took another leap of faith and let it always on, and playing, for three/four weeks. When, afterwards, I turned up the volume again… I was in heaven 🙂
A couple of years later I swapped the Octave for an Hex and, after the usual burn-in, heaven turned even better

Then… I was caught by DSD malarky and started looking for something that could do it natively. Spent one year trying different solutions and found a couple I could quite happily live with. In that long while the Hex was left sitting in a cupboard. One day I took it out, connected it, started playing some music and… know what? I kissed DSDs bye-bye, ordered an Adagio and will never look back 😉

I went through several DAC’s last year before deciding on the Adagio. In my system, it easily surpassed other highly regarded models including the PS Audio Directstream DSD. The Adagio has a natural ease to the presentation and sounds great regardless of what you throw at it. The volume control is incredibly well done and I don’t hear any resolution loss at lower levels. The build quality is outstanding and I’ve never run into any issues. It’s a great design and will be sticking around in my system for a long time.

What more can you do after launching one of the best dac’s available today? We are aware that our current flagship Pavane is hard to beat but at least one idea was not realized yet. The idea of having a decent volume control to prevent a necessary pre-amplifier could improve performance dramatically. However, we also know that the way of introducing such device in the signal chain can also have a negative effect.

Experiments were made and as result the best sound was coming directly from our Transient™ modules. Even the digital approach did not convince us but still one idea was not tried yet. Especially in case of R2R ladder dac’s it is quite easy to change the output voltage of the dac by changing its reference voltage but to realize this, dedicated dac boards were designed to get the best regulation possible.

Like our Pavane, “forward correction” techniques are used to drive both mono dac boards. The result of this process is an extremely high linearity, right down to -140 dB, which gives the Adagio a realistic 24 bit dynamic range. The Adagio is a step forwards as it omits a pre-amplifier. It is musical, honors the Non-oversampling principle and simultaneously incorporating the technological progress that has been made over the years.
