  1. Ron Cagenello

The Onyx really gets the balance right with its presentation of clarity and body. That is, there’s a great amount of resolution while not sacrificing the fullness of instruments where it’s warranted. Some people would say that makes it more “analog” but I find that it has greater dynamics than my vinyl rig, while maintaining the benefits of the analog-type sound. I’ve had several Metrum DACs and this one is the best so far (though I’ve never had any more expensive models, yet!). I found the coax connection better in my setup than USB, and it certainly simplifies things without needing all the USB “decrapifiers” – I use a baby Ambre connected to a sonictransporter via a network switch for Roon-served FLAC files.

    Awsome design and amasing sound
1 year with it and partners good with my tube gear. Simple to use.I use the xlr out and love it.

  3. Fabio Faranda

I’m an analogist and reserved the digital listening only to music I hadn’t on vinyl. I changed a lot of converters but the sound was always not convincing. When I listened for the first time to the Musette converter I was stonishe for the natural sound and soundstage I heard. A frien of mine was there, and immediatly decided to buy the Onyx. When he came to me with his new Onyx I didn’expect to hear so many differences, but the difference of price was really worth of the sound improvement. so I decided to buy the Onyx. When, in a blind listening, we listened to the Onyx vs a DCS Rossini everybody present at the listening session with no doubt preferred the Onyx. The listening took place with my Acoustat X with amplifiers rebuilt with a new tube driver (no operationals anymore) and a passive Vishay resistors pre-amp. Van den Hul the first ultimate and The second cables. I’m now enjoiyng the digital listening as never before.Thank You very much to everybody of Metrum Acoustics for Your precious work!

With the goal of creating a very affordable, yet superior DAC in mind the designers of Metrum Acoustics have developed a new DAC, the ONYX By Metrum Acoustics.

It was an unprecedented challenge, which was eventually solved by using an entirely new chip, which has been exclusively developed by Metrum Acoustics and was first used in the PAVANE.

The parallel driven R2R ladder networks as used in the four DAC modules performs , especially when combined with our FPGA-driven “forward correction module”, on a higher level. This module splits up the audio samples for each channel into new separate data streams. Each dac cluster processes a portion of the data in the most linear region of the dac chips. The result of this process is an extremely high linearity, right down to -140 dB, which gives the ONYX a realistic 24 bit dynamic range. Due to the dual mono design over the entire frequency range an extremely high channel separation of 120 dB is realized. This contributes to the flawless positioning of instruments.

In short, the ONYX is a DAC that has taken all the lessons and experiences that her designer has learned over the years, and combined them in an ambitious DAC that can fit in every system. It is musical, honors the Non-oversampling principle while simultaneously incorporating the technological progress that has been made over the years.
